Winter 284 Challenge - The Scottish Munros in a continuous winter walk

In the winter of 2005 Steve Perry undertook Britain’s toughest long distance walk. Steve, of Todmorden in West Yorkshire, climbed all the Munros – the famous 3000ft mountains that lie scattered far and wide throughout the Highlands of Scotland – in a single, uninterrupted journey – entirely on foot.

Although all of the Scottish Munros have been linked in a continuous walk on a number of occasions in summer this had never been attempted in the winter season. Martin Moran completed all the Munros in a single winter nearly 20 years ago but did so with vehicle support that allowed him to travel each week to the area of Scotland with the most favourable conditions. Steve's winter Munro round in a single unsupported journey was a huge challenge involving carrying all his own kit, camping most of the time and accepting the prevailing weather and underfoot conditions as he came across them on his preset route.

The journey was tough! In total 1500 miles had to be walked, 284 mountains had to be climbed, all in a harsh Scottish winter.

The Scottish hills in winter are a challenging environment where Steve experienced some of the worst of winter weather. To combat this Steve chose to use exclusively RAB clothing throughout his challenge, chosen for its combination of maximum protection for minimal weight. Steve also used a RAB Quantum 600 Endurance down sleeping bag on the 'winter 284'.

He was also up against the clock. The challenge started on the 1st of December where Steve climbed Ben More on Mull, marking the start of a challenge he finished on the summit of Ben Hope in Sutherland 120 days later.

He climbed on average 2.37 mountains every day for 120 days while negotiating deep impassable snows, blizzards, white-outs and iced rocky ridges.

This type of arduous challenge isn’t new to Steve. Two years ago he became the first person to walk from Lands’ End to John O’Groats via all of the mainland 3000ft mountains, a journey that had him living out in the hills for 7 months and climbing a total of 303 mountains.
