Solo to the South Pole

Fiona Thornewill has become only the second women to walk solo to the South Pole, setting a new fastest time of 41 days in the process. Using RAB Vapour-rise as her expedition base layer allowed Fiona to strip down to her next to skin layer for strenuous sled hauling, while retaining vital windproofing and breathability.
Fiona also used the RAB one piece expedition Pertex windsuit which provided a highly breathable, lightweight windproof outer layer, and used a RAB Kinder smock as a warm layer for rests and colder conditions.

Fiona set off from Hurcules inlet on Nov 30th 2003 with a sled weighing 285lbs and encountered temperatures down to -50°C with winds of up to 70mph. Fiona has a long association with both the Poles and with RAB gear having become the first women to trek to both poles (in 2000 and 2001 with Catherine Hartley) and then with husband Mike repeating the journeys to become the first married couple to reach both poles.
Rab Vapour-rise base layers, down insulation and pertex shell has become first choice for the Thornewills, and vital feedback on fabrics and design detail is fed into our development process for the future.
